Odometer flashes 999999, 888888 then turns off? (1st post)

Car: 1988 Pontiac GTA
Engine: 5.7L TPI
Transmission: 700R4
Odometer flashes 999999, 888888 then turns off? (1st post)
Anyone run across this before?
Just purchased this from our impound yard for $400. I have the security Ign. key for it but the engine will not start as well...but it does have an aftermarket alarm in it...going to have to wait until they tow it to his house...but I want to get some ideas on what to check...first thing will be to remove the aftermarket alarm as there is no remote for it.

Black on black with orginal rims, black leather int., exhaust, etc.
