Hi I have a 1982 carbed Trans Am and I'm pretty sure my ECM is fried, from what I was told in another thread. I was also told that in 82 the ECM was a one year only, but I'm wondering if I can use one from another car. I'm going to the yards tomorrow and thought I'd pick one up. Also if my ECM is fried how likely is it that it will happen to the new one? Should I check something else first before replacing it?....Thanks

The odds of one let alone two ecms getting fried is unlikly. What part of the ecm went bad on you. It usually takes a pretty big spike to take out an ecm. Id say your problem is probably somewhere else.

 

Well I'm not entirely sure...the paper clip trick wasn't showing codes. My check engine light is always on, it never blinks. I was told that if it doesn't even blink when the ignition is on that the ECM is bad. I was also told how to check it, but I never went out and bought a voltmeter to check everything out, nor am I entrirely sure how to go about doing it even if I have the shop manuel.

I had an engine fire recently and some wires got burned, nothing real major actually just the insulation burned off.....but since then my choke light acts possesed even if it isn't choking...its accompanied by a buzz as well. The check engine light however has been on before the engine fire, for what seems like forever. Someone told me I should just replace the wiring harness...and I've gone to three different yards and can't find a decent wiring harness. I have a carbed 82 by the way. I just don't know what to do anymore.

Oh and one more thing for the last few days or on my stock volt gauge when I'm feeway driving the volts get all the way up to 18

 

If you burned the wire that triggers the ecm to flash the check engine light you wont be able to pull codes but the ecm may still be fine.

 

Well the ECM light has been on forever...before the engine fire, I don't think I made it that clear on my post, sorry.
