Computer Problems
Hey,
Can anyone help! Here's the deal I've got a 1985 Z28 with a 350 swapped in. I believe my computer is bad. My car runs real funky and we've checked the injectors, tps, iac, and numerous other things, and they are all fine. But it just doesn't respond like it used to and it will start up and die. To get it to stay running I have to shut it off and start it again then it will run damn near fine, it will still idle funky though. So what I need is to see if anyone knows how to check the computer to see if it is bad, and if that is even possible.
Thanks to anyone who responds

My car is throwing a code 23, which my haynes manual says is a manifold temp. sensor. The egr valve does not get vacuum but the solenoid does. When you unplug the egr solenoid connector the egr valve gets vacuum, if you plug the solenoid connector back in you no longer get vacuum to the egr valve. No it is the original computer.

Okay,
Your code 23 = Manifold Air Temperature sensor (low temperature indicated). Check your wiring for it and maybe replace the sensor. Check the vacuum tubing going from the egr solenoid to the EGR valve, it does get clogged from time and usage. Use carb cleaner to clean it out or replace it. If you still have problems with the EGR solenoid, replace it. What engine did you have in there originally that you are able to use the original computer & chip?

We originally had a 305 TPI in it.
Part of troubleshooting the egr solenoid led us to the TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) wiring harness which we found that the connector was broken and just hanging beside the transmission. We had to pull the trans pan and replace the connector in the trans, we also inspected the TCC solenoid which checked out to be good. So we then replaced the damaged wiring harness and test drove it which we discovered that by plugging that in it made the shift jerky, and fixing the harness did not cure the egr problem.
With the TCC wiring harness disconnected the shift was very solid with no jerking.
