Questions about 1982 Cluster Wiring

Hi All:

Can anyone tell me what the red, black and green wires are that are coming out of the speedometer of the 1982 Trans-Am that i'm working on? The wires go into a yellow plastic box, and then the tracings go to connector C2. On C2 the three wires are connected to a hot pink/black wire, a black ground wire, and a mysterious brown wire. The speedometer is cable driven, so WHAT are the wires?

Also, whats with the 470 oHm resistor that goes to the voltage regulator? Does that have to be connected, and where is the 470 oHm resistor in the cluster?

I thought the resistor might have something to do with monitoring the charging system status, but i'm not sure. I saw on some of the schematics in my 1987 factory shop manual that it said something like, 470 oHm resistor, OR volts gage, or hidden bulb in electronic cluster ????

Thanks,

Lee B.

To answer your question about the speedo. those wires are for the VSS buffer box and is a yellow box located near the ECM under the dash on the passenger side. That mysterious brown wire goes to connector C207 and from there goes to pin 16 of the ECM. The pink/black wire goes to the gages fuse & brake switch.

VSS on an 82?

Hi:

I know about the yellow box near the ECM on the 87 (the VSS).

This has a cable driven speedometer and the yellow box I mentioned is very small (about 1") and is on the back of the cluster.

But for all I know, there is a VSS on 82 Trans-Ams for the computer or something, after all, I don't have the manual.

Hell, I can't even find the cruise control module on this car, if there is one! It does have the buttons on the TS stick for it.

Thanks,

Lee B.

yeah why would there be a VSS box on a speedo cable vehicle ?
i have found the same phenomenom on the 83 84 85 gm trucks too!

ive taken alot of gm vehicles apart, seen this speedometer wiring on many 80s vehicles with cable type speedo!

if you remove the EST/ESC ECM and harness then is it pointless to have this VSS or whatever wiring to the speedo anymore ?

where do the wires go to from the speedo backside ??
to lockup converter wiring of the tranny ?

AFAIK i have only seen these wires on auto trans equipped cars and truck, i cant recall finding such on any manual trans vehicles 80's

Because a lot of the earlier cars did not have the VSS mounted on the transmission. Instead they got the signal for the VSS from the cable driven speedometer and the VSS was mounted on the instrument cluster. Sorry about the location given for the VSS earlier as I was thinking about the VSS buffer box which is a different component of the VSS system where the VSS is located on the transmission.

I think everything is falling into place!

Thank You Trickster!

I think everything is falling into place!

I think the yellow box in the cluster is some kind of VSS buffer. The same as the yellow VSS buffer in later cars. There's probably a VSS in the speedometer, as odd as that seems.

The mysterious brown wire is the same color as a brown wire on the cruise control servo.

Hmmm...

Thanks Again,

Lee B.
