mph gauge

Car: 91 camaro z28
Engine: 355
Transmission: 5 speed
Axle/Gears: 410
mph gauge
well my mph gauge has recently gone out and now it will not mark my speed until i hit about 65 or 70. Some days on wet rodes if i rag out or somethin itll work fine for about a few minutes then go back to not workin till i get to about 70. Iv checked the wirin and it seems to be fine. Anybody got any idea what could be causing this?

Speedometer Out
I had similar problem in my 91 Trans-Am.
It is VERY likely that you need a new vehicle speed sensor, as opposed to a speedometer repair. The VSS is very much a wear item and does eventually break. Wiring that is inside the car rarely goes bad unless it is disturbed or damaged by someone.
You could check the wire under the car where it goes into the transmission on the VSS. Anything can happen to electrical connections that are outside the car, especially under the car.
Replacing the VSS was not too bad, even with my back being messed up the way it is. When you pull it out, look carefully at how far it slides into the transmission. A fair amount of trans fluid my drain when you pull it out, and will need to be replaced to normal dipstick levels after the repair. As a reminder, the dipstick to an auto trans must be checked after the car has been run for 20 min (hot as opposed to cold car).
The hardest part was getting the new gear on the new vss to mesh up right with the gear inside the transmission. You can tell its right when the sensor slides in far enough to bolt up right WITHOUT too much forcing. I think the gear tries to fall off the sensor shaft too when you go to slide it in. It took me about four tries to get it in there right.
