Is this a fog light relay or switch problem

Yes, I've used the search function but I need a more specific answer to my problem.

When I bought my GTA, both fog lamps (oem equipment) were smashed. The guy included one, but he probably didn't realize the other one was cracked.

I installed the stock one he gave me, but the light will only stay on if I hold down the fog light switch (with the parking lights on).

Reading on this board, I took the advise to get a set of Blazer lights at WalMart. I installed the light, but I still have the same problem as before - both lights will only stay on if I hold down the fog light switch. As soon as I let go, they go off.

BTW The fog light switch has a little LED that turns green while I hold down the switch.

The fog light switch does not work like the defogger switch - you can only push it down on one side. The defogger switch you can push on one side to turn it on, and the other side to turn it off. The fog light switch can only be pressed on.

So is my switch bad (I don't know if it supposed to work this way) or is my relay bad?

Thanks,

Don

Sounds like a failing switch. My '86 switch is a maintained push button, released by the OFF button. I'm guessing your '90 is about the same, and the mechanical latch of the ON button is failing.

Yep, it just sounds like the switch isn't latching anymore.

I may be pulling the factory switch off my 87 IROC soon, PM me if you're interested in it

If not, you can get a universal switch from a parts house. Then just wire that up.

I just replaced my fog lights and had an odd problem. I had 12.8 volts at the light connections, but when I applied a load (lights) the voltage dropped to nothing. Obviously there was a bad connection somewhere, but all connections were good, and so was the switch. I decided to replace the relay and that cured the problem. I cut the relay open and found it totally rusted inside. Auto Zone has relays for $10. Part number MR78 and it's a normally stocked item.

You might want to replace the relay just for general principals. With the condition of this one relay of mine, I'm coinsidering replacing all my relays to prevent trouble down the road.
