VATS - Trickster - I know you know :)

Here is the delema. A friend of mine purchased a 1990 RS (Good Deal but no "chip" key) - got the title signed over to him and walked into the dealership with the original brass key.

The dealer was unable to determine the resistance of the key that was installed in that car and wants to charge hime $35 for each key that is cut and programed (times 15). Isnt that a money making adventure.

I know how to bypass the system if I knew the resistance of the key (that I dont have).

Is the only way to bypass this system by trying 15 different resistors till I get it right?

Will reprograming the ECM for a new key work on the 1990? (20 minute ignition cycling method).

Did he ever start the car and take it for a test drive? PM me on this would you. And not the 20 minute recycling of the ECM wont work on our cars, it only worked on most Buicks.

i had this problem with 1991 rs before i sold it, it my chevy tpi book it said to measure the key with a dvm... i did that and my key read 7.5k ... if u have a dvm, put a lead on the key and the other lead on the piece of black material on the key (clean the key 1st..) and get a reading for resistance....
