service engine soon light code 43

my car is a 91 5.0 tbi firebird a/t
while driving if i keep the engine speed under 2,000 rpm and
accelerate slowly and drive like an old man. i get no light.
if i step on the gas to merge into traffic what i would call moderate
acceleration. the light may come on shortly after. if i really hammer the gas the light almost comes on immediatly, and then has alot less power.i do not hear any engine ping knock or detonation. i get a code 43 i think (just going by memory)
which is for electronic spark control module, next to the brake booster.
finally my question is how do i determine if this needs replaced or if it is really the knock sensor or just a bad ground. i'm not sure where to start.
please help

I had a knock sensor problem and did a post I think it was "code 43 y pipe knock", whatever it was TRICKSTER .:hail: posted a wiring diagram for me showing all the knock and ESC wiring along with diagnostics.
I cheated and after changing my knock sensor and still having the problem I just cut the ground wire on the ESC and made a new one on to the fender.
Changing the sensor is easy, so is making a fresh ground and the ESC can be found in every junk yard so it's no biggie.
I'll try and find the posting for you.

Hey I sure hope you still check this, I am having the same problem you were having with your car. I also have a 91 TBI 5.0 that when I accelerate or try to kick in the passing gear it throws a code 43 and then it falls on its face. I was just wondering if you found out what the problem was with yours and could you please shed some light on my problem.

praying you'll respond,
Mike B

I've heard of similar issues and it was the fuel injectors.

Re: service engine soon light code 43

i had this problome in my tbi 5.0 and it seemd like the car had no ***** and it wasent as loud as it should of been. so i got a new ESC and it did nothing, i bought a coil just incase (blaster 2) dident do nothing, then i knoticed the car was running extreamly hot so i wired up the fan to the blaster coil so the fan is always on with the ignition still no diffrence... so then the other day my car bogs and dies i pop the hood and the engine wouldent take in the air and fuel...so i knew right away my cat was cloged so i got it fixed and ive had no problome ever since and i got all teh get up and go i need. and no more code 43 idk why it threw that code for a cloged cat.
