Its not in the lever... Its a switch the lever pushes into... To remove the lever simply pull, takes a little effort, and its not for the faint hearted, but it comes out.
I am not sure where the switch is tho... I think it may be up above where the lever is. But I remember something about some linkage that goes to a switch that would be down the column under the dash... I don't know. But I do know that the lever is nothing more than a post with some wires and switches that are for the cruise.

This just pulls out?

The switch is the hard part to get to. There are tons of diagrams for the column but if you have tilt wheel, its gonna be a b!tch. I wound up scrapping my original column and getting on from an '86 IROC-Z. It already had the working switch and signal lever which is what I really needed. The whole column swap only took like 30 minutes. 1000000x easier than tearing into the column itself.

now i'm just asking, but are you SURE the switch is bad? does it not work AT ALL, or does it not "click" when you go hi or lo? reason i'm asking is that sometimes the switch comes loose, and it can't be engaged by the rod that runs down the column. the switch itself is located on the column, down near the floorboard, about the 11:00 position. there are two 10mm screws on it for adjustment and/or replacement. anyhow, there is a rod that runs down the column from the multi-func lever to the switch, so maybe the switch is loose, or maybe that rod has popped out... just trying to help. that switch can be a pita to get to, but if you drop the column down, it's a lot easier.

Repaired mine
My high beams wouldn't come on. The switch wasn't clicking. I thought I would have to replace the lever on the column. After researching here I made an adjustment to the switch under the dash and it works perfect now. I took a pair of needle nose and bent the mounting bracket ever so slightly to get it closer to the rod. Worked for me.....
