fan / choke / voltage mess

Yesterday the car is fine. Today i start it, it over heats and blows the overflow tank. The fan didnt come on. I traced it down to the relay.

The supply wires are fine, the large 12v and ground for the fan. The problem is with the smaller trigger leads for the relay. The ground is fine, but im not getting 12v from the other lead, twin brown wires. Its 1.7-2.3 volts. The relay clicks when i power it, and it shows continuity when energized.

I ran a temp wire from the battery to give the relay a 12v trigger and it did nothing, i replaced the relay and then the fan turned on. Even though the old relay checked fine, it doesnt work with the temp 12v. The new relay does. The original brown wires are still dead.

The fan fuse is fine, but there is no voltage in the fuse receptacle. The entire circuit seems to be dead.

So i need to use the car so i setup the relay with a new 12v supply and the fan seems to be working fine. Then as soon as a start the car the choke light is on. I reverse my changes and the light stays on. I check the voltage and its 12.5, the alt isnt working. I shut off the car put everything back original, and now its 14.5. Rig the fan relay up so it works once again and still 14.5.

Choke light is still on. Voltage is 14.5, now the choke wont shut off the car keeps kicking into high idle. I check the voltage at the choke its 14.5.

So right now i disabled the choke so i can drive the car. It seems to run well. Voltage is good, choke light is on.

I should also add the choke light had been occasionally flashing the last month. Eventually the car died, replaced the pickup coil and the choke light was quiet ever since, until today.

The alternator is from a 76 pickup, it was tested in august and checked out fine. I have 3 and its the only one that wont toss belts.

Im getting tired of the gremlins.

So turns out theres 2 fuses. One called fan, one called fan/ch.

The writing on fan/ch was almost gone and it was hiding in the corner. Turns out the fan relay blew then blew that fuse. Replaced it and everything is fine now.

So whats the point of this other fan fuse thats dead? The tpi for 85 have 2 fans?
