How do I bypass the computer.
First my dash died and now I'm tearing down the engine and replacing parts and if at all possible I would like to bypass the computer. Can anyone tell me how to do this and what kind of parts I would need?
You'll need a fuel system that does not rely on an ECM. You'll need a distributor with an advance systemn that does not rely on an ECM. If you have an electric fuel pump (you might on an '85) you'll need a means to operate the fuel pump when the ignition is turned ON.
If you need to meet an emissions inspection requirement, you may not be able to accomplish that without am ECM to monitor the O² sensor and adjust fuel mixture accordingly.

So far there is no emission inspection. theres a mechanical feul pump on the block. is there a way to be able to use the current distributer without the computer. any help would be apreciated. Do i have to do anything to the ignition? Also I'm going to have to replace the carb right? also do I just yank the computer out or are there other things using it beside the motor?

Did some one switch engines, from a fuel injected motor to a carburated one? Even with a mechanical fuel pump you still have to have a gravity draw from the fuel tank and they have different fuel pressures. It's not as simple as one may think it is.

if you get a new or rebuilt distributor make sure and check the pick up coil.. i bought a "new" distributor from the local auto store and had been having erratic problems (random no spark) for the last 6 months trying to figure out what it was.. what a PITA.

A link to articles in another post had a link to megasquirt. This would allow you run without the ecu. Then the ecu would only be needed if other compoents need it.
