I did a search for this but found nothing.

Anyone know part numbers (RadioShack, DigiKey, etc) for the amber and green LEDs inside the dash switches (fog lamps,. defroster)? I bought some from RadioShack, size matched and were the only ones, but the package doesn't indicate the voltage. Blew the LED as soon as I turned the switch on

 

Depending on the color, they only need between 2 and 3.5 volts.
Red, yellow, and amber only need 2.0-2.2 volts, while white and blue can handle upwards of 3.5.
You need to use a 680 to 1k-ohm resistor in line with either lead of the LED to drop the current/voltage down to a safe level.

 

Yeah I knew I'd probably have to do that, but hoping as a last resort. The switches have no resistors inline, just the LED in a little plastic holder that comes out.

 

you need to clip the lead of the LED and resistor short, solder them together, with leads butting and then it'll fit in there and not blow.

kind of a pain, but its doable. the only other option would be to find a LED made for 12v. thoes usually have the resistor built in.

I dont think those are LEDs.Theyre just standard bulbs.Thats why theres no resistor.Thats also why you burnt/blew the LED when you switch it on.The indicator you see on the switch is just a lense for the bulb,not a LED....

 

There is a lens, yes, but behind it is an LED. I'll take a photo next time I pull it apart (if possible). It looks just like the RadioShack piece I have too.

Hopefully I'll find the perfect match for those who need to replace the ones in their switches.

It is a relatively simple procedure - twist holder and remove bulb - and much better than spending $40+ for a new switch.
