wacky tach?

my tach has never worked right since i got the car... i used to work if i divide the rpm it was on by 3 and it gave a pretty close estimate. i switched from tbi to carb and now its just pegged out. does any one have any advice?

i thought i saw a tach repair/troubleshooting thread like 2 years ago, but i cant find it?

It is likely that the calibration resistors in the tach electronics are failing (changing resistance) due to age, or the adjacent filter capacitor is suffering from insulation breakdown. The proper fix would be to install new precision resistors and/or a mylar capacitor. The OEM resistors are in a DIP, which makes replacement a bit of a chore - Not impossible, but a challenge.
