Can you hook up an MSD 6AL's power wire up to the starter???
I would like to try and keep my engine compartment wiring as clean and uncluttered as possible. With that being said, I have one question about my ignition. I am in the process of hooking up my 6AL box, and was looking at all the connections. Am I able to take the heavy red wire(used to power up the unit) and attach it to the starter to where the main battery positive cable goes? Any pros or cons to doing this? I would figure that if I hooked up the ignition there, it would still have constant power due to having contact with the battery cable. The only drawback that I can see is that there might be a momentary voltage/current spike to the 6AL box when trying to start the car. Any comments/opinions/suggestions are welcome. Thanks, Paul Moore

ive seen it done on a streetrod before, so im going to assume it works... i dont see any reason it shouldnt.
athough, for the saftey of your car, you may want to put a fuse inbetween the two... unless theres one already in the 6AL.....

Well, I just reread the instructions that came with the ignition and it said that you are able to hook up the heavy red wire to either the battery or the positive of the starter solenoid so that is good. Now for my next question. The small red wire is supposed to go to a switched 12V source. Would the ignition still work if I hooked up this small red wire to the same place where the purple wire goes to on the starter? Or would I be better off having it go to the fuse panel and tap into something in there instead? Thanks for your help on this issue, Paul Moore
By the way there is a fuse built into the MSD 6AL.

nope, that one has to goto a ignition on source (one that is also on while cranking.)
the wire on the starter is only on when the starter is actually turning.

Cool deal thanks for the reply. I guess I will just have to lengthen the wire and run it into the passenger compartment and hook it up to the ignition wire or someplace in the fuse panel that has switched power. I am also going to use the white wire as a kill switch. Last thing that I want to do is smoke a brand new ignition by hooking it up improperly. Thanks, Paul Moore
