here is how i did it, I took the entire dash setup from a later firebird and swapped the whole dash unit. To get the RPM's and MPH working you will need an electric sending unit from a later transmission 86 and newer IIRC. I then swapped the dash in and used a later wiring harness that reads the VSS. It can be a pain being 83 odds are you are carbed. I do believe someone wrote a tech article on how to do this.
The hard way (and long way I think)
swap the dash cluster and do a hell of alot of wiring. thats it as simple as you can get it.
