power mirror on door problem
My 82 s/e has power mirrors. The drivers side mirror does not work. But when I flip the switch to operate the passanger side mirror it works except for the down position on the cursor.Basicly I dont know if the problem is the drivers side power mirror motor ,switch,or some kind of short.

I would try out a new switch first.
If that doesn't work, it might be the motor.
I have both power mirrors that are coming off of my Formula. PM if interested.

It should be the same.
If you want a black one, find a Camaro in the junkyard and it will have it on the door panel.

The newer switch you found will work. Just be very carefull with removing it from the holder. There are tabs that can easily be broken off if you aren't carefull. That may be what is the problem with your old switch.
I hope for your sake that it turns out to be a switch problem. Otherwise you'll have to break the mirror glass to access the motor. Early power mirrors such as yours have a hidden screw behind the mirror glass that holds on the mirror mount to the motor. Once you've repaired or replaced the motor you'll need to get a new mirror and glue it to the mount. Some auto parts stores such as Pep Boys sell an aftermarket replacement mirror glass for a LOT less than GM. It comes with two strips of double-sided adhesive, but I also like to glue it to the mount. FYI, the driver-side aftermarket glass mirror is OK. The passenger-side aftermarket glass is inferior to GM's because the lettering is a bit fuzzy looking by comparison.
Newer GM power mirrors have a cross-shaped piece of metal that snaps onto the back of the mirror mount. On those you can power the mirror down and usually pop the mirror mount free using a screwdriver.

Replacing my switch
I'm having the same problems but worse... the switch doesn't work for either miror.
I just bought this off ebay for 15 bucks hoping the switch is bad:
Ebay 3rd Gen Switch Replacement
There is no way that BOTH mirror motors are bad right?
~crosses fingers~

Update............
I installed the gray switch and heres what happens now:
-when switch is in passenger position the left and right work on the cursor but the up and down dont do anything.
-when the switch is in drivers side position the up and down on cursor work but for the passenger side and the left and right dont work
I wired it exactly the same as the other one and the other one was wired correctly.
weird,what do I do now?

New (used) switch arrived. It looks great. The thing is, the mirrors only move up and down, not left and right on both sides. That could only mean one thing really... The switch is busted on when it comes to moving the mirrors left and right.
Argh!

Use a circuit tester to make sure it's the switch by pulling the connector off and reading directly from the wiring. I'm having the same problem and will do this check next weekend.

Update: Out of the blue, the left/right controls on the driver's side mirror have started to work. The passenger's side lateral control is still whacked. I'm homing in on this problem! Very please with the new switch.

Im trying to install this now in my bird.Instead of messing with the switch on the center consol which works fine for passenger side but not drivers side ill just make this one operate the drivers side.I have not wired it but I installed it to see how it looks.Anyone ever install one of these on a firebird before like Im about to do?
