I am trying to get an 86 2.8 liter through the NJ emissions testing. What a mess! I am working on a long list of problems with some of the worst being vacuum leaks.

What I am really wondering about right now concerns the PROM in the ECM in this car. I picked up an AutoXRay obd-1 scanner. It seems to do a pretty good job of reading the computer. The speed sensor came up dirty and I am researching that. What I am really trying to understand is why it is indicating the car is in fourth gear, the converter isn't locked and it's not able to read neutral or park. Considering the car has the five speed none of that makes sense. I am thinking either the scanner is not right on this or the PROM was switched for the wrong one sometime in the life of this car. The RPO Label indicates the car was shipped with the 5 speed.

Any ideas? Does anyone know how to cross reference the prom id to the engine and trans? The Xray machine shows a #3001 and I can't find any reference to it.
