Main power wires getting burned up
Yesterday as I was driving my car just died again. I lost all power except for headlights. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet but I'm pretty sure those wires that go to the starter are burned up again. I think its because they are so close to the exhaust becaus the pastic harnness is melted again after I just replaced it. Anyone else had this problem. It has happened to me a couple of times now and I'm getting sick of it. I was thinking of replacing the wire from where it goes to the firewall and instead of hooking it up to the main starter terminal I'll just connect it to the battery post where it's a bit cooler. Will this work? Anyone have any better ideas? I have to drive to Texas on Friday so I don't have much time. And I only get 2 days to drive there so I need my car to be reliable and not break down on the trip.
Wherever you connect it, you need to use a section of fusible link or a large (about 60A) fuse to protect the body wiring. It may be a result of electrical heating as well as exhaust heating, so don't disregard the current protection.
