Speedo simply doesn't work
A few months ago I put in a new rear end, and since then my speedometer, odometer, and cruise control have not worked at all.
I don't remember messing with anything electronic during the swap -- what could have caused this?

Did you remember to reconnect the wires at the VSS down on the tranny after the swap? Just a thought!!!!!!!!!!
Are you getting a check engine light with a code 24 and did you change to a higher gear ratio when you did the swap?

The thing is, I never disconnected anything electrical -- atleast intentionally. It was all mechanical stuff that was changed. I went from 2.72(or 73) to a 3.27 rear end.
I get that "Service Engine Soon" light all the time too, especiallly when I'm on the freeway and I slow down to get off.
What does that stuff mean (I haven't checked any codes or anything)? What can I check on the transmission to see if something was unplugged?

When you went from the 2.73 to a 3.27 rear end, there were several things that should have been changed. The drive and driven gears, the eprom, the VSS (maybe) and tires (maybe). I mentioned maybe beside the tires and VSS because I don't know which ones you have. Pull the codes from the ECM and see what they are, I bet one of them is CODE 24 for the VSS.

Step one is to pull the codes, list them here, and then we can assist in trouble-shooting the problem.

So do I go to autozone and rent one of those scanner tools? Does it plug into under the driverside dash or into the computer?
Does the scanner tell you what the code means, or do you look it up in the manual?

Use the El Cheapo tool that most of us have used at one time or another. It is commonly known as a paper clip that is bent and put into the top right two terminals of the ALDL that is located in front of the drivers right knee. Insert the tool into the terminals and turn the key to the on position (do not start the engine). The check engine light will start to flash at you, it will first flash the code 12 ( flash...flash flash) at you 3 times. This is a normal code so don't worry about it. Any other codes will then flash at you three times. After they have all flashed at you they will repeat the cycle until you pull the clip. BTW, the coolant fan should also come on and this is also normal.

How many other codes are there?
Do I need to take note of the number of times the codes flash?
If I check the codes, do they automatically reset or can I check them again if needed?

Chomp, there are 22 different codes not counting the codes for the SIR's (airbag) system, that your car can throw at you depending on the malfunction. As I mentioned earlier the codes stored in your ECM's memory will each flash at you three times before moving on to the next code stored in the memory. After the last code stored in memory has flashed for the third time, then the cycle will start all over again as long as the jumper is in pin "A" & "B" of the ALDL and the key is in the "ON" position. The codes will remain in the ECM's memory until the battery is disconnected for approximately 5 minutes to clear them.

Okay I tried the paperclip scanner method
The check engine light blinked twice and then it blinked four times and then repeated as predicted.
I went to autoparts stores to see if they could look up the codes, but they couldn't. So I'm confident that someone here will know what codes 2 and 4 mean.
It's a 1992 RS
