hey Trickster could i get a copy of the wiring diagram aswell, I'm trying to get my pull down motor working so i dont have to slam the lid, My car is an 88 camaro If i pull the relay and cross the right wires it goes up and the latch switch will bring it back down, not sure if its the relay of the latch switch, i have an od white wire with a plastic connector on it and nowhere to plug it in so i was wondering if this had to be hooked to something and what?

Take a look at the Technical Article I wrote on repairing the 1986-91 hatch pull-down units. If you find that you need parts they are available on my web site under the "Hatch Pull-Down Parts" category.

Car: 1987 Camaro IROC
Engine: 350
I am having a problem with my hatch motor as well. I have a 1987 IROC. I have owned it since 1995 and the hatch motor has never worked. I replaced the solenoid about five years ago, but that did not fix the problem. Since my hatch closed just fine I put it on the back of my to do list. This spring I took my IROC out once or twice and then it started killing my battery. I bought a new battery and within a week it had killed that one as well. I was told there was an electrical drain somewhere, so I took it to a local electrical shop. They looked at it and said the hatch motor was the problem, so they took the fuse out and all was better. I am tired of it not working now, so I bought a hatch motor replacement from A1 Autoparts and installed it today. After I installed it I replaced the fuse, but there is nothing happening with the motor. I printed off the above mentioned technical article, but I could not find any mistakes in my installation. Any ideas? Is there anything the electrical shop could have disconnected somewhere in the car that I need to reconnect other than the fuse?
Thanks for your help.

Update: In another thread I found a poster who suggested wiring the motor directly to the battary to see if it worked, so I tried it with my old motor and the motor worked! So I am going to assume that the problem was not with the motor, but somewhere else, ideas???

Did you try raising the parking lever to the first detent first? That is how your system is wired to operate, the parking brake lever must be raised to the first detent to complete the circuit.

I suspect your problem is with the one of two switches. Bot the striker-sensing switch (mounted just in front of the latch) or the reversing switch (mounted to the motor with one Phillips-head screw) can cause the symptome you describe. The solenoid only releases the latch and has nothing to do with the pull-down motor. It is on a completely different circuit. First thing to check is that you have power at the red with white stripe wire that connects to the blue wire. Also the parking brake only should need to be pulled up IF the motor is running. That is a safety feature to prevent you from popping the hatch open while driving.
Both the striker-sensing switch and reversing switch have been covered be me in prior posts. Also make sure that the hatch pull-down motor isn't installed too low. It must power down and CLICK. That CLICK is the reversing switch being tripped to shut off the pull-down motor. If instead the pull-down motor stalls out before it reaches the end of the cycle and trips the reversing switch it will still be powered. It will kill your battery and also fry the motor in short order.

What do I need to check the red/white wire? Do any of the typical autoparts stores usually stock the reversing switch or the striker sensing switch?
Thanks for your help!

Test for +12v using a multi-meter or test light. An auto parts store won't have either switch. The striker-sensing switch was discontinued by GM last year, but I still have them in stock. You can get the reversing switch from the dealer or Top-Down Solutions.

OK, so this morning I took another shot at it. All of a sudden the motor started workedand flipped the switch on the reversing switch and it is now in the up position. I can't get it to do anything else now.
Also, the ACC fuse, is that the big silver one in there that is 30amps (I think)?
