Fixed my Speedometer

Hi all my speedo went out about a week ago, and have been driving it like that till I could get time to look at it. Tis an 89 2.8L firebird, and till the speedo went had been working relatively well. It just dropped to 0, and stayed there mid-ride.

I followed the wires from the VSS at the tail end of the tranny, they go into a loom up and over the tranny, meet up with some other wires for another device on the tranny, then up into oblivion where I can't reach or see them anymore. Lucky me, I followed the loom with my finger and found 3 broken wires!

They were all broken at the same place and the loom didn't look very melted, so there must be something kind of sharp up there cutting them. I fixed the break, speedo works, and holy crap so does cruise control! Never worked since I got this car!

Hope this helps someone.

Hi,

Could you tell me approximately where you found those 3 cut wires? I have been trying to fix my VSS problem off and on now for a couple of years. Replaced the VSS with a new one but still doesn't work. Gears look good in the tranny. Figure it must be a cut wire somewhere but have no way to get under the car other than small ramps. My cruise doesn't work either BTW.

Thanks,
Tim

Well if its been a couple years a few more months never hurt eh? Right alongside the tranny pan, extending from the VSS itself. The wires are in a loom, and as they made the minor turn up into the nether region of the engine they rubbed enough against a sharp corner.

Check this thread, it shows the wires in the loom. The break was forward of this.
