alt getting hot along with wire
Hey everyone this is my prob so i get up today and goto leave and my cars dead so i jump it with my moms van and dont think to much of it. When i got home like 10 min latur i smelt melting plastic so i poped the hood and the hot wire that goes from the alt to the batterie was melting in to the top of the batterie, thats how hot it was and my alt was very hot enough were u couldnt put ur hand on it. The quage is reading 14-15 volts charging so it dosent seem like there was anything wrong from inside the car, can you guys help i dotn know if the dead batterie thing has to do with it or not, i dont know what is wrong the alt is new so
But im going to stop driving it till i get a reply cause i dont want to mess up something else ,or catch on fire.

First get the battery checked or replace it. Second after you replace the battery then check the charging voltage. After a start it should throttle up to close to 15 volts then settle down to around 13.8 to 14.5 volts on average. If it stays at 15 for more than 10 min or so suspect a bad regulator inside the generator. It is not unusual for the gen to get too hot to hold your hand on between underhood temps and the heat generated by the gen itself-they use the case as the heat sink for the diodes.

sounds like battery is toast. follow dannos instructions. and hope you didnt cook alternator. also make sure battery terminals are not all loose or corroded. and if wire insulation is burnt off replace it !
