Fuel Pump Wire Short?

Well the other day i ran out of gas, so i thought. It was still above the shaded part of the guage but my needle floats some so i just thought it was off. My dad brought gas, put it in, stuggled to start but it did. Went to the gas station and filled it up and it ran fine. Next morning, took a few tries to crank which it has never done. Got to my friends house, went to crank up and it wouldnt. Cranked a few times but idled out of control and when you hit the gas it quit. I thought i must have ruined the fuel pump when I thought i ran out of gas because i didn't hear it and i could spray carb. cleaner in the tpi intake and it would run. I replaced the fuel pump, strainer, and filter with one of my friends, that took 5 hours (cut a hole in the bottom of the hatch, and dropped the gas tank just enough to get it out). Soon as we were done, it cranked right up. Drove it a mile, then washed it. When i was done it wouldnt crank. Once again the fuel pump wasnt running. Just wined. Also i decided to check the fuel pump i took out, hooked it up to a battery and it worked. Someone mentioned they had a car that they thought was the fuel pump but it was the dist. cap somehow shutting it off. I thought that was BS but i changed it anyway. Changed the roller and cap and that didnt do anything. So then i replaced the coil and when i did, it started right up again. Next day, went to pull out of the driveway, and it did the same thing as when i thought i was out of gas. I turned it on and to see if i could the fuel pump. The fuel pump wasnt on but one of the fans were and it wasnt even hot. And thats where its sitting now.

Im thinking it has to be a short or bad connection somewhere in the Fuel pump wires or some other wires. Either that or the computer is going bad.

Does anyone know what it is or agree that its the wires?

If it is the wires, i have to make the ultimate sacrafice and take my car to someone else because i dont work with electricity Atleast its a guy i know and trust that works at home in his own garage.

Might have been me. Pull the ECM fuse and wait 30 sec then reinstall it. Turn on the key and have someone near the tank and see if it whines up. Or, check the fuel rail pressure. You can probably borrow a guage and fitting from autozone. If you don't have access to one do what I said, get a rag, uncap the pressure test port and with the rag over the Schrader valve push the valve insert down and see if fuel sprays. That will tell you if you have line pressure. If you lost the dist pulses the injectors won't fire, that's why it will start with fluid sometimes. A very common problem is the pickup coil in the dist gets corroded, you can look at the donut and the insulation will be crusty and you may see green corrosion on the fine copper wire. Also, look at the plug from the pickup to the ign module. If it is burnt replace the pickup and the module.

i got mine fixed. Your gonna have to replace the fuel pump relay and the part that it plugs into. Its not your fuel pump, just the relay.

Hopefully this will save you the trouble of replacing your fuel pump like i did.

Chances are you will also have to replace that 20 AMP that is located near the battery also.
