gas guage problems
I need help guys. I just got my first camaro. I got a 92 rs tbi 305. I plan to restore it so i may someday pass it on to my kid. I'm having a problem with my gas guage jumping up and down, giving me a hard time to read the actual amount of gas in the tank. When I step on the gas pedal the needle goes up by a quarter of tank and when I step on the barkes it goes down a quarter tank below the stating point. at idle it s hard to tell exactly whats in the tank. ive had 2 camaros and the gauge jumped around like that on both of them. thought it was normal for these cars. If there is a problem, the only fix would be replacing the float/sending unit which means pulling the exhaust to get the tank out. big project, you decide if its worth it.

As I read your post, your fuel gauge is hyper-sensitive. Instead of taking time to adapt to the changing fuel level, it follows every slosh of fuel in real time that moves the float. Is this correct?
In my experience with GM fuel gauges, if the reading follows the fuel movement in real time, then the gauge itself is bad. The reading from the sending unit is dampened in the gauge. If the gauge reads correctly for the most part, say if you are just sitting in one place, then the sender is not at fault.
The senders do go bad, but often it is due to buildup on the windings in the tank, which lead to dead spots in the gauge readings.
