I replaced it with a 4 gauge wire but I'm worried if it shorts I will no longer have a car. What size fuse or fusible link should I use?

On your car the fusible link is a 20 guage wire and the wire from the alternator to the starter that the fusible link is in is a 16 guage wire. If you have replaced that wire with a 4 guage wire, I would suggest adding lots more insurance on it and keeping the fire departments number on speed dial.

Yeah, hence the need to put the fuse in. It's really 20 gauge and thats not a typo? Seems awfully small considering all power travels through it.

Even better, then previous owner bypassed the link that runs to the starter... and the cable is slightly melted from my headers.
