Fusible link problems

I bought my car in March and the fusible links at the starter were all cut out when the previous owner converter to a top terminal battery. The car has ran excellent and has no charging problems or anything, but obviously no fusible links can lead to a huge fire. So I go to autozone and was given black 16 gauge GM fusible link wire. I wire it to the alternator, and to the starter. Starter blows instantly as expected. So I bypass it and start the car. The alternator wire gets extremely hot and slowly melts under high load. So I'm wondering what the ratings or AWG for the fusible links are.
