strange no start problem
Hey guy's I've been having a bizzarre starting problem with my 92 T/A convertible and yesterday I solved it but I am not sure why, Ever since I bought it it was hard to start sometimes you would turn the key and the starter would engage without a problem, other times you would flick the key 10 times and just get a clicking from under the hood I thought it might be VATS related so I burned a custom prom with the VATS disabled and there was no change. I had changed the solenoid on the starter last year and still no change, So yesterday I decided to change the starter assy and again it kept doing the same thing so now I was pissed off and decided to break out the wiring diagram and go through the whole starting/wirinng system and after 2 hours under the dash with my ohm meter I came to what I thought was the clutch cut out switch(located on the clutch pedal) well I disconnected it and put a jumper across the connector and when I turned the key I didnt even get the clicking, So then I pushed the clutch in and when I turned the key again it would not start but I did hear the clicking. now remember this is with the connector for the switch on the clutch pedal disconnected so this tells me there must be another clutch switch somewhere? Now heres the really crazy part when I removed the jumper from the connector and just left it unplugged then pushed in the clutch pedal the car started and now it starts every time no problems So can anyone explain what it is that I disconnected? and why it works great now that that switch is unplugged? I've looked through the 92 firebird wiring diagrams in the service manual and as far as I can seehere is only one clutch related switch so I am stumped.

May I refer you to section 8A-34-0 of your service manual (cruise control schematics) where you will find the cruise control clutch switch located on the clutch pedal bracket.

Thanks for the reference, that does explain what that switch is for but after looking at the schematic I cant see how that switch could have anything to do with locking out the starter circuit? the car has been starting first try all day but if I plug that switch back in it wil go back to the way it was, I just don't get it!
