Fusible Link Blowing....Short Found??(Mini Poll)

Guys,

Some of you may remember my saga with this '89 TTA and how 1 day the Main Power Fusible Link (Fuse Link B on the Power Distribution Schematic)
blew out of nowhere, fixed it, 20 minutes later it blows again...OK...Time to get serious..Ordered the Factory Manual & TTA Suplement from Helm's and following the Power Distribution Schematic I began Taking the Engine compartment Wiring harness apart to Follow the wire..all the way through to C100 on the Firewall it's PERFECT, OK...under the dash.. follow it to the S200 Splice..Perfect...OK..follow it from there to Fusebox...Perfect...from S200 to Ignition Switch...Perfect...Replace Ignition Switch Anyway...from S200 to Convience Center..Impossible to follow as it loops up and over the SW in a Very tight and Black Tape covered harness, although looking through with dash & gauges Bezel off it looks good.....I also go ahead and Replace Starter as my Parts Dealer checks it and says Solenoid is not putting out enough power........

So........after putting EVERYTHING back together...Car has been Running Perfect, Idled for several hours and drove 10 or so miles...(Afraid to drive Too far for Obvious Reasons)

1. New Starter.....Could it have been a BAD Starter Soleniod Frying the link..this whole thing started when I hit a Huge Dip/Bump????

2. Ignition Switch....Could it have been a Bad Ignition Switch??? Using a Continuity Tester how would I even test it?? From what plug to what plug???

3. I Left out the Pwe Accesorys/Pwr Windows Circuit Breaker (No power windows or door locks) thinking one of these two Circuit Breakers wasn't doing it's Job??? Would a Bad Circuit breaker let current pass to Fry the Link???

I would think that it almost HAS to be one of the above 3....Whats your vote???

Well since you didn't mention checking them I will ask you about them. Did you check the wiring to the blower high speed relay and connector C115. It is on the power distribution schematic for fusible link "B"?

Trickster, Thanks,

In the TTA Suplement, fusible Link "B" is the Main Power Wire, not the Fans. And that's the one thats Blowing. The one for the fan's is Fine...

Yes but one thing that you have to remember is that the supplement doesn't apply to all the vehicles for that year. Since you have checked all the wires and everything and since it doesn't run to the fuse block except at the pwr acc circuit breaker. Your most likely culprit is either the red wire at pin "B3" of connector "C1" or the red wire at pin "B2" of connector "C2" on the ignition switch.

Trickster, thanks, and I agree that I 'Thought' that as well, especiallt looking at the Schematic, that it had to be the Wiring - Or Connectors (C1 & C2) - or even the Ignition switch itself. Well the wiring and Connectors 'Looked' Perfect, so I just went ahead and replaced the Switch....

How about what I mentioned above about the possibilty of Current passing through the 35 Amp PWR ACC Circuit Breaker, and subsequently popping the link????? I have that Breaker Out now since I've been running the car!

Also tonight I'm going to go out for a 10 or so mile drive again (fingers Crossed)!!

i know this won't help but i've had similar problems. once when i replaced a starter. somehow a ground was loose just enough to cause it to keep popping.

the second, while i'm not sure what grid and where it's located on a schematic i just recently went through the same issues but it involved one of the links poping off of the alternator harness plug end.

i wish you luck, it's no fun indeed..

Well...a week later, and about 75 or so miles and the car is fine,
and the Links look great..so who knows, I'm thinking it was just the Old Starter Solenoid maybe had a Loose Wire inside..touching the case...and shorting out the Main power Fusible link as THAT is the one consuming all the power...maybe when I hit the 'bump' that Started this whole nightmare it was enough to loosen the wire and Short it out against the case..INSTANTLY blowing the link..which is how it happened. It's a shame I traded away the old Starter when I got the new one...

Thanks Everyone
