Crane HI-6 ignition
YO,
Okay so I had this Crane ignition box hanging around from an old project. It had never been used so I figured it would work well in my camaro. I ordered the supposed "plug-n-play" wiring kit from Crane and thought it would work out to be worth the hour to install it. Well, it ended up not being so much of a plug and play ordeal and the car ran like crap. After two days of trying to figure out why it would cut out at only 2500 RPM, I just unhooked it. And the engine runs great. I checked my plugs and they were just nasty. It acted like it was trying to stall as I approached traffic lights but wouldn't quite die. Oh, and did I mention the engine would barely rev over 2500. Yes, the REV limiter was set!! Checked it and readjusted it twice to different levels, still started sputtering like it had no spark at 2500...
I thought it was weird. Anyone have any thoughts??
It was not an attempt to "fix" something. The engine ran fine before, just thinking it would add a little something to throttle response. I have seen improvements from MSD and Jacob's ignitions on friends' cars...

sorry to here that. I've had mine for 3 years no problems. I have a Crane HI-6 w/ L-92 coil. i have a 92 camaro used to have a TBI now a stealthram. Everything pluged and played. or made plugs per the instructions. I think i only had to make one wire for the Tach. If it's not to hard set the ingition to 00 on the rev limiter. i believe thats the default for no rev limiter. i can't remeber that part. Try calling Crane there pretty good about fixing them if you have a porblem. atleast thats what they told me. hopw this help

Since your combo is very similar to mine, 385 HSR and same year, I have a question for you about the install.
The plug/play harness from Crane takes the dual plugs from the coil and sends their signal back to the box. Then it has a lead from the box to the coil, but it only has a connection to the coil on one plug. Is that how yours is?? It seemed wrong to me from the beginning, but that is how the thing is set up...I don't try to out smart the instructions when in comes to most electronics.
Lemme know, maybe I hooked it up wrong. I am not trying to bad mouth Crane, they are a good company...

ok i don't really understand what your saying but let me see if i can explain what i remember. If you got he Crane coil it has its own plug orange and black. that plugs into the same colors on the ingnition. now heres the part i know. If you hade a TBI or small cap distributor the old coil plugs that went into the coil go to the adapter harness. there should be two plugs for those and they only go one way. those are the pink and white wires. now if you had a large cap with the coil in the cap i don't know how you wire that. If you have some pics i might be able to help you more. hope this helps at all.

I have the small cap with dual plug coil. My coil and distributor are, however, MSD parts. I haven't tried to call Crane about the install, I think I did it right though. Like I said, I am not terribly worried about it!! Maybe one day I will look into hooking it up again...
Thanks
