Fusable link from alternator burning up
Fusable link from alternator burning up
I can't figure this one out. I have a 1991 firebird, that keeps burning up it's fusable link from the alternator. I replaced it once, and it worked a while, but yesterday I let the seat back put it in reverse and it burned up right off the bat. I was wondering if anybody had that problem too. I'm going to look over every wire that may be open and tape them up so they won't ground. I might check the seat as well. Maybe the seatbelt sensor on the seat is shorting. But does anyone have any ideas?
From what I can determine, the power seat (and other accessories) should be powered through Fuse Link A, while the alternator output should be through Fuse Link D. Unless the battery has little or no capacity, and the alternator is carrying all the instantaneous load current, the link for the alternator should be able to sustain the load of the seat motor. Does the voltage change notably when you actuate the seat motor? Does the alternator fuse link fail if you actuate the seat motor when the engine is not running?
If the seat is presenting that much load, it may be time to clean up the seat mechanism, relubricate and adjust it, and check the motors for brush/commutator condition.
