Rewiring my butchered 12V+ wiring

Alright, my positive battery cable wiring is butchered. Burned wires, cuts, blown fusible links, etc. Anyway, I'm replacing it all and want to make sure its right.

1. How long is it from drivers side battery to starter. I'm thinking 48" should be about right and will measure, but I don't have my car in this area code so I'd like to get a general idea of what I need before I get home.
2. There is no fusible link from battery + to starter, correct? None of my wiring diagrams show that- but I suppose with the current draw of a starter the link would still be rather beefy. What if it shorts out, basically a car meltdown?
3. What gauge is stock cable to the starter?

What a pain in the butt, but no sense doing a whole engine and interior over and leave a few feet of crappy wiring. Thanks for any input.
