Remote start on a 5 speed car
Brother would like me to install a remote start on his 5 speed. I told him a million times that it is dangerous and everything but he still wants it done. What needs to be done to install the kit since I do not think that they make ones other then for automatics. The only other thing that I could think of was the nuetral safety switch. Is that what would need to be done so that he wouldent need to push the clutch to start it?? Any other advice would be greatly appriciated. If it works on his car, I will soon be doing it to my 91

I believe you'd need a relay to bridge the wires on the clutch safety switch. Honestly, if I were going to do it, I'd get a signed note from the person who had me install the sytsem stating that they know it's dangerous & contrary to the remote start's intended use. A LOT of people leave their manual transmissions in gear when they kill the engine. That spells a lot of trouble, as you seem to be telling your brother.
I kind of harp on this subject because I've been burnt by a best friend (business partner; no contract), my father's father was burnt (business partner died; widow took the entire company because there was no contract spelling out who got what) and I've known other people who have had problems that could easily have been solved by having a contract ahead of time -- highly recommended!

Don't know how the laws work in Long Island, But in MD if you install it you can be held liable if something happens.
I know of a case locally where the installer was held liable for bypassing a safety device (neutral safety switch on the clutch). This was after the guy that swore he would never leave the car in gear started it in a parking lot (in gear) with a little girl walking between his car and the car in front. Now she's crippled. You want that? People forget things, accidents happen. Don't do it.

They make kits that work on manuals. I'd look into those first, but really I wouldn't even do it. Its unsafe and it shows that you are lazy.
Automatics can take off on themselves too if your linkage is not adjusted right.

I auctually just found a kit for manuals. I talked ot a representative and he said that there is a safety that will notice if the car is not in nuetral and will not start unless it is. I dont think that it is for lazy people, the reason my brother wants it done is because he lives up in syracuse for college and in the winter heating the car up is a hassel.
