tach problem

my 88 irocz has a problem with the tach at idle it shows about 1500-2000 rpm. when the motor is over probably 1500 rpm the tach is pegged all the way over. any ideas? I think there is a switch or something on the back of the guage to set it to 4, 6, or 8 cylinder engine. anyone else have this problem?

Is this a stock tachometer? If so, I doubt there is a "4-6-8" switch on the rear.

and

The second contains a link to the first. I have ordered the .0033 cap referenced in the first thread and will install it in my 91 RS in the next couple of weeks. I'm not sure whether it will sovle the problem or not.
