Check Engine Light With Broken Speedometer
I VE GOT A 1985 FIREBIRD 305 TPI . I TOOK OUT THE ORGINAL SPEEDO METER AND NOW THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON, AND IT RUNS POORLY HELP?????? THX RENE HOEK-- AMSTERDAM -THE NETHERLANDS...

The original speedometer should have had a wire harness connector on the rear. That would have been the VSS. It was connected to the ECM to provide vehicle speed information. You'll need that input to enable the ECM to control the transmission torque converter lockup, the cooling fan shutoff, and possibly some of the IAC/stall saver programming on decel. If you have installed a speedometer without a VSS output, you may be able to install a separate VSS by using a speedometer cable splitter (like the type used on older curise controls) and a VSS on the second cable.
