ESC module questions
ESC module questions
I have a TPI system out of a 86 TA. It is going into a jeep with a painless wiring system. Do I need the external ESC module with this ecm? I am using a small cap HEI with the ignition module inside cap. Does the ESC take place of the ignition module or vice versa? I have spoken with Painless, but got nowhere. TIA
- Welcome Aboard!
- Congratulations. That should be one unusual Jeep.
- Yes, you need an external ESC with the 1227165 ECM.
- No, the ignition amplifier/switch module in the distributor works in conjunction with the ESC, and does not replace it. The HEI module must be a type that is compatible with an ESC system instead of the older, 4-lead type.
- You're not alone. It seems that their product is decent, but their Customer Assistance is lacking a bit.
I've done a Painless/TPI on a '57 Bel Air, and everything necessary was present. Some of the lead lengths were exceptionally long, but that's far better than too short.
Come on back in when you get it closer and start to have questions about the programming and wiring with your transmission, neutral safety, brake input, VSS, EVAP, crank signal from the ignition switch, and MAF.
Vader, thanks for the info. The 86 TA was mine, and before I got rid of it, I pulled the Tuned Port. I didn't realize that there was an ESC module until the car was gone.. My 91 vette is speed/density car and doesn't have one, so I never thought to look. I probably will have to come back when I get further into programming. Again, I have programmed my speed/density cars for years, but the MAP cars will take some time to learn. This board is a great resource, thanks to all who make it possible.
