MAF sensor's interchangable year-year?

Just wondering if MAF sensor's are able to be swapped if from different years? Eg. can a 1987 car use one from an '89?
The part #'s from GM are different for both. Same $, but different #'s. If mine goes, do I have to use another from '87, or can I widen my options?
Thanks people.

You can use any 1987 up Maf for a TPI 305/350. All the same

Now that's only for TPI cars right. We can't use LT1 or LS1 ones right. Adam :-)

Actually, you can use an '86-89 interchangably, except for the Buicks.

The '85 TPI MAF was the only bastard type (analog).

I talked to some Buick GN guys, they are now using MAF sensors from LS1's (think) with translators. This seems to be a real nice way for the GN's to go. I wonder if there's a way for us to do this, being a bigger MAF sensor to use then?
