Code ?

I have an 87 f bird. 5.0 carb. Code poped up 41. My book give problem , then in back gives diffrent problem. So which one is right?

It means that there is no distributor pulse reference to the ECM at specified engine vacuum. You could have a problem with either the MAP or VAC sensor.

OK, well thank you. To narrow it down, which one of these would make it run like crap and surge. And what could be damaged easily when someone is replacing the starter.

Either one of them would do that and it could be that one of them is just disconnected or the vacuum line to it is broken or has come off. Neither one of them is located near the starter. However the vacuum line may have been pulled loose by someone disconnecting the battery.
