engine run on
I've got a carbed 350 in an '85 Trans Am. The distributor is a vac advance from an '84.
My problem is that the thing runs for a few seconds after the key is turned off. Most of the time, it'll just run normally for a second or two, then shut down. But sometimes it deisels for a while before sighing to a stop.
I know the carb is tuned right. If the car is running, I can pull the power wire off the distributor, and it shuts off immediately. This is repeatable, so I have to ask:
Is there something in between the coil and the key that is acting like a capacitor and storing charge, or is my ignition switch just not shutting off?
Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

the engine's brand new, less than 5,000 miles on it, so there better not be any carbon in it.
A buddy of mine took a look at it and saw that my fan was wired up wrong. When the ignition is shut off, the fan keeps rotating. Since there is no relay in beween the fan and the battery, the rotating fan acts as a generator and supplies the ignition with power until it stops turning.

i believe with the fan wired up like that it is hard on the ignition module.
i have seen plenty of cars come in as a no start because of a dead module, replace the module & then find it runs for a few seconds after the key is turned off.

yeah, i just finished wiring up a relay via the electronics board here. shuts off like its supposed to now. when i figured out what was wrong, i put a simple on off switch. i'd disconnect the fan from power before i shut the car off. worked really nicely until that time i forgot to turn the fan back on again.
