gauge cluster problem

gauge cluster problem
ok i have a 92 camaro with a 110 speedometer and the odometer does nto work. i have swap several clusters. and i even swapped out the motors and stuff inside from ones that worked. now my speedo doesnt work but my odometer does. what heck do i do? do i have to send it ways to be rebuilt for some ungodly price of 150? does anyone have any suggestions? and how would i go about swapping in a iroc 145 cluster if i decide to do so? any help would be appriaciated.

First off whatever you end up doing you have to keep your 110mph cluster unless you tune your ECM. The 145 will be inaccurate and way off. I had a similiar problem in my 92' Z28 L98 w/ 145 speedo. You should try checking your speed sensor. If that doesnt work and your already tried swapping other ones Id say have it rebuilt. You quoted $150, wow thats a good price I got mine sent all the way to a GM tech shop in CA, total price $575.00 without shipping, but they replaced everything and it works great, heck even the rpm gauge is pretty accurate.

That might work, but Im not positive. But at one point when I was frustrated while trying to fix and or swap gauges I put in a 110mph from a 305 TBI just to see if it would work and it was way off, because all of the electronics were the same but it doesnt compensate for the different numbering.

What is your original speedo ? I think where its different is possibly in the ECM and it works accordingly to what engine is in place. If you search for it I think you will find it I asked one of the moderators and he told me that you have to use the same mph speedo UNLESS you tune your ECM to fit accordingly.

Like I was sayin man Im not really positive. Ask one of the moderators on here I believe it was "joker" that helped me with this one. But in the end I just sent mine to GM so I didnt have to deal with this problem. Like you were saying about not being able to tune the TPI ECM for speedo, I wasnt aware of that. But I do remember being told on here that if you put a different mph speedo in, that it would be inaccurate unless the ECM or PROM was tuned.
Dammit, I want to talk to someone who has actually done the 110-145 swap then and see what they say. Supposedly it is common and everyone does it, at least that is why some people try to charge 300$ for a 145mph cluster.
Actually, come to think of it, this really should be in the tech archives. Someone with the know how could really save us a ton of trouble. If you do a search you'll see that most people just claim that it is plug and play.

Ya, if you find one of the moderators just ask them and they'll definately know what to do. I talked to one of them awhile back, I just dont remember all of the specifics.

I did however switch to a 6 speed from a 97 Z28 and the VSS signal is differant and it read way off. I bought a Dakota Digital box and installed it between my VSS sensor on the tranny and the gauge. Its adjustable and I set it up for my car and it read exact.
Of course now I am doing an LS1 swap, and the speedo is now controlled by the ECM, so I took the Dakota Digital out. Anybody need a converter box?

Dang man, you ressurected an old post. Since then I've found out that they're plug-and-play from 110-145. I also used the Dakota Digital box in my car, since my last post on this thread I've done a LT1 swap and a 6 speed swap and used the dakota digital. I also decided to go back to a 4L60E and that is totally electronic, so it just used its own VSS, works fine but RPM's are slightly off.

I replied to an old post because I hate finding threads with no complete answers. I just hope when someone searchs with a similar problem they can find the answers they need. I am using the heck out of thirdgen for my LS1 swap, and want to give a little back.....

Okay, this sucks. I am done with my LS1 swap, everything works, except the speedo. I dont know what else to check. My speedo worked before the swap, it would also appear my vss is outputing a signal to the ecu, because I disconnected the vss and drove the car and it set off the check engine light. Hooked it back up and the check engine light went off after a few miles, but still no speedo. I am lost!

Gentlemen,
I am getting rid of the darn instrument cluster panel on my 2.8L and customizing my guages. Yes, it isn't as simple as it sounds, because of the ECM, so some sensors have to be doubled up, etc....
I will be purchasing the gauges "pig-tail" assembly" made by Covan Classics, which has the necessary wire diagrams and instructions. I believe it costs around $135 through Summit.
My only question to you guys is:
1) Does anybody know the "Correct" Ohm rating of the fuel sending unit, so that proper fuel gauge is purchased?
2) What is the deal with the Speedometer. It has the speedometer cable connected to it, plus it has the VSS sensor connected to it. I emailed AutoMeter I believe, and they said I could use either the mechanical or electronic speedometer - my choice. In other words, their answer was unclear.
How do I connect an independent speedometer, and still be able to connect the VSS to it?
