keeps running after I take the key out

I converted to carb but that is not new and it has been running fine that way for 3 years. My fuel pump is hotwired through the original relay which is activated by the IGN port in the fuse box.

When I turn the key off, my radio goes off and the alternator stops charging, etc. But the fuel pump and the ignition both somehow still have power. I replaced the ignition switch on the top of the column and that didn't change anything.

Any Ideas?

Could there be something in the lock cylinder itself?

She wants to live!!!!! lol...

Hmmm.. How do you get it to turn off then? lol.

Sounds to me, if it was in the lock cylinder, Nothing would turn off. So to me it sounds like either a wiring issue (Pump/Distributor was not wired to correct cuicut) or possibly a bad relay that is faulted on.

Interesting though..

I think I know why if you have an MSD box..... If so and it's connected to a non MSD distributor- you will have to use the little itsy relay that came with it in the box. Once you put that in the MSD box everything will work right.

I'm taking it that it isn't just plain old simple dieseling run on that happens with carb cars sometimes

it's not diesling. it's fully running. I could drive it that way if I wanted.

Also, the way I get it to turn off is by continually turning the key from on to off and eventually it takes it.

No MSD box either

If your oil pressure switch is still present above the oil filter. Unplug it and see is that solves the problem.

sounds like a short to me. if it is still running then somehow there is still current flowing through the ignition circuit and fuel pump. check all your connections and check your wiring that you did with your hotwire.

No MSD box either

if that turns it off chances are that should be your problem.
might just need to rebuild the lock if you can.

Because you rewired it and it was working for three years the problem is
a short or stuck relay in the ig. circuit. Possibly a wire insulation rub
thru. You must trace it manually to find where it rubbed. </FONT>
