Starter turns with key "on" AND "start"

So I just got done putting the 6 speed in. Put the clutch neutral switch where the megashifter one was, left the orange and black wires open, blue and green to the reverse lights.

I had the column out drilling for the master cylinder, I cut the old shifter cable. It was spring loaded in the switch so it should rest as if it were park.

When I turn the key to "ON" , and depress the clutch to actuate the neutral switch... the starter turns.

What's going on?

I'm lost. Not sure where to look here.

Where is the starter enable relay?

I just pulled the column down. When I wiggle the connector that runs off the key turn rod.... I can get the voltages to disappear on the neutral switch yellow wire. I think there is something in the switch.

I'll check your idea too. I'm totally open to whatever this is.

Got it figured out. Was a short. One of the butt connectors from my alarm setup left a hair of wire exposed, and was shorting out on something.

Thanks

I once drove from Princeton, NJ, to Detroit, MI and had the same problem. After an evening of pulling apart the wiring harness it ended up being a bad shifter. The backup lights get +12 and somehow were shorting to the purple wire (starter) so when the key was in the on position the starter would crank over. A trusty paperclip, which was harder to find than a multimeter , was all I needed to get me back on the road.
I know that wasn't much help but with these shifters starting to wear out it might help somebody else.
