VSS: Need help bad, I'm begging!!!
I have searched for a total of 5 hours in two nights.
- OK I have an 86 IROC 305 TPI.
- The car doesn't have the RPO sheet
- has posi rear disc if that helps
- It is a 700R4
- My problem is this: I have code 24 for VSS. The tranny has the cable going
to the speedo gear housing instead of the electrical connection. The guy who owned it before me put the tranny in. I am getting mismatched info as to what the car should have. the D9A, D9B or the D9E electrical speedo gear housing in the tail shaft, or the kind of VSS that is behind speedometer like in older F bodies. The speedometer register 75% of the time but is way off. I was probably doing 100mph the other night and it read 50. I can live with that. My biggest thing is the torque converter keeps locking and unlocking.
- I can't find any wiring that would go to the tranny for an electrical speedo houing there.
The question is, what VSS should I have or what can I do?

I have an 86 iroc tpi.You should have a mechanical speedometer, driven by a cable that comes in through the firewall below the brake booster. In back of the speedometer you will see a yellow box that connects to the little gizmo that reads the magnetic pulses coming off the back of the speedo right where the cable comes in.that yellow box interprets the pulses and sends them to the ecm which counts the pulses and locks up the torque converter when it thinks you are doing 40 mph. From what you are saying it sounds like the braintrusts that did your tranny never swapped out the little gear assy that your speed cable hooks into on your tranny. There are different plastic gear assys with different ratios depending on your rearend ratio. If you put the wrong one in,your speedo will be way off. Most likely they just left the one that was already in the replacement tranny in and never swapped your old one into the new tranny.Or they damaged it or both...good luck.
oh yes one more thing, the torque converter lockup is wired through the main brake switch assy.So that when you hit your brakes the torque converter lockup will release.Their is a mechanical adjustment on the big switch assy for positioning to keep it set right,if its off a tiny bit your converter lockup will keep popping on and off.I went through this with mine. The way to easily check,at least with mine, was to use the back of your foot to lift the brake pedal out as much as you can and see if the torque converter lockup stabilizes. With mine as soon as I did this everything was fine, when I stopped pulling outwards on the brake pedal the torque converter lockup started popping in and out again.Needless to say be careful when you are doing this.Find a straight lonely stretch of road somewhere where there is nobody else around.Good luck..

tagta189, you are a life saver!!! I will be able to sleep wel tonight thanks to you!!!! I guess the big thing now after checking that stuff is figuring out which gears I need. I will check that brake pedal tomorrow, never would have even thought of that. Thanks again.
