Dumb voltage question

Good afternoon all,

I have two simple question for everybody:

1. How do you check for voltage at a location;

- and -

2. How do you check resistance at a location?

Is it one probe to ground and one at the location I'm checking?

Basically, It seems that I'm not getting any power to my starter (no click sound and no power drain on the battery).

Thanks,

Scott

For voltage you put the black lead to ground and the red lead at what ever point you need to test. But remember that the volt meter is telling you difference on voltage between the leads. So if you have a bad ground it can give you odd readings. Say your 'ground' is really 2 volts over ground, the meter will read 10Vdc, not 12Vdc.
For resistance first DISCONNECT THE BATTERY. NEVER measure resistance on a live circuit. Then put the meter leads between the points you what to check the resistance. Polarity make not difference here. If you checking for a resistance to ground put one lead on ground. If you checking the resistance between two points (say a sensor of some kind) you do it between those two point, not ground. Simple right.
