Voltage - but no start

I put my car (89 camaro - tpi) into storage last year. It died after driving to my brothers. It sometimes would not start after driving around. After waiting a few minutes it would start again - until last fall and then I just stored it. It now will not even crank. I used to get a click from behind the dash _ I think that is the starter relay. That click is not there anymore and I have measured the voltage at the starter and it is alright. If the relay is gone will I still have voltage at the starter or is it more likely that the solenoid is gone at the starter. I am running headers also. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Bring your battery to get load tested.

If you're trying to measure voltage at the starter, you must put one lead of the DMM on positive battery terminal. Now take the other lead and test the ignition switch and B+ terminals on the starter. (KOEC) Voltage should be under 3 tenths of a volt. The real test is KOEC amperage at the starter. But you will need an amp clamp. This is a very good investment. Take it and wrap it around the B+ wire to starter. Amperage should be in the 300++ range.

If your still having trouble, try checking the fusible links. Let use know how your testing goes!

I had the same thing happen to me. Make sure that you have good connections. Mine were a little older and needed to be replaced.

Well it turns out the starter solenoid was gone. The whole unit was only 5 years old, but then again I guess some starters don't even last that long. I didn't bother trying to attempt to change it in the garage at home. With the restricted space from the headers I decided to take it to a buddy's shop and with the hoist, we verified the solenoid was the problem with an amperage test. The starter came out in a snap and the whole job took about 45 minutes.
