Come:help:Wire My MapLights Please...
i just got a free domelight cover with 2 map lights. i am guessing my rs didnt come with extra wiring. so i wont have the connector like the iroc it came from. i want the 2 map switches to be hot all the time; not just with the key on or only when the dome is on for obvious reasons. i came up with:
a) running wire from my fuse box to the lights and another to a grounded screw. would i use a slot not being used or could i wire into my headlight or taillight fuse? (not sure how to do this one)
b) this may not be possible. do i have constant 12v to the dome light? (im pretty sure i dont) if i do, i could splice into its +wire and the other to ground/-wire. right?
c)whatever you guys think... haha i dont know a lot about electronics, only thing i wired was my head unit and amp.
thanks for reading

option b might actually work. If i remember right, the switches for the doors open/closed to turn on the dome light, connects/disconnects ground from the circuit. That would mean you have a constant 12V going to the dome light.

Firebat you have it right.Almost,if not all GM products - well up to '91,accessories are hot and it's ground connection is broken to turn it off ie;radiator fan relays, interior lights among others.

awesome news guys. so i could use my multimeter with the doors shut and test for a hot side? then splice my map lights' hot to it, and screw the other wire to my t-top bar for a ground?also, how important is it on these lights to be wired correct? (will it hurt to have the wires backwards?)
Doors open or shut, the wire with 12V will always have 12V. (if everything is wired right of course).
The 12V wire is probably going to be orange/red/yellow or some other color. The ground wire will probably be white or black.
If you hook it up wrong, you could either blow a fuse or nothing at all would happen if you connected ground on both sides. Maybe.
Is this the overhead console? I have one console waiting to be installed and have the wiring on it. I can tell you how its wired. If its the overhead console, one switch is for the dome, one is for the map light.

I got the same unit and was wondering if anyone has done this. Do we have to cut/trim the headliner? If so, could someone post a diagram with the deminsions of the headliner to be removed.
This might help for you overhead console guys Overhead Console Installation
