Is the security light on the gauges supposed to light up for a second when the car starts, to show that it is working? I have never seen it light up before, just wondering if it supposed to or not.

Yeah it lights up. I believe it also lights up when the system shuts itself down too.

 

Hmmm. I guess mine is probably burnt out then. =\

 

what about when the security light stays on? What does that mean?

 

Just to add, the light stays on even while driving. After reading more threads, i'm learning about the whole VATS system. Is it bad to keep running it with the light always on?

 

If the light remains on, the VATS module is not properly decoding the key. There is no theft protection in this mode. Chances are that the lock cylinder contacts are dirty, damaged, or the connections are intermittent. The light should turn on and remain on for about five seconds when the ignition is first turned on.
