mechanical speedo problem

I have a mechanical speedo in my 83 and i'm not sure how to get it out. Whats the secret? Is there a way to get it to just pull straight out?

The cable has to be released first, or while removing it. There's very little room to get a hand back there and squeeze the release tabs, so it may help to remove the upper dash pad (about eight screws).
