Need help with wiring
Hello all,
I was recently given a 1987 Camaro with a supposed 1985 350cc LT1 Engine originally built for the Texas highway patrol as a drug interdiction car. My problem is this. There is some wiring under the hood (some complete and some cut) but I haven't got a clue as to where it is supposed to connect to at this time. Since this car is an interceptor nobody seems to know what is supposed to be wired where and as of now I figured I would turn to the experts to see what is soo mysterous about the interceptor packages. I plan on tearing down the engine tommorow (came seperately from the car) morning and posting some pictures of the engine and the body to show what I am dealing with. For right now I guess my question is simply this. Are the Haynes manual wiring schematics for 1982-1992 Camaros going to work for me or should I go see the men in black for help?
And if you haven't figured it out yet by reading my post I am obviously not a mechanic nor do I claim to be one. My wifes father gave me the car for something to do in my spare time (hobby car) and although I have a basic understanding of general engine functions and maintenance I feel I am a bit in over my head with this whole wiring business. Any help or guidance in this matter is greatly appreciated.

emm well, to answer one of your questions.. IF the car has an LT1 motor in it, a hayes manual wont help you. the LT1's werent introduced in the camaros until they redesigned them in 1993. If you can post a pic of the motor, we can clear that up and maybe they just told you it had an LT1. I guess we can move on from that point.

All I know is what I was told. According to my father-in-law the car was purchased directly from the Texas DPS as a salvaged vehicle and the engine was not swapped. According to him it is an LT1. Now you know why I am asking for assistance. Here are some pics I took of the engine. Hope this helps. I didn't get a chance to start the teardown of the engine today. Hopefully I can get time tomorrow.

Desrt, that looks to be an 87 305 TBI not TPI and not LT1 for sure. Look on the rear engine block where the bellhousing would bolt up and clean off that area looking for casting numbers. You should see an L03, L98 or something. But I'm certain that's not an LT1's were 350 CID not 305 and used Optispark dizzys. The LT1 dizzy was behind the water pump.
You guys are good! I decoded the Engine number (once I found it) and it is a 305 manufatured in Flint May 4, 1987 and has the suffix code of SDB which does in fact indicate a 305 engine. I looked at the back bell housing mount and found the GM5.0LG stamp there. I could not tell for certain even after cleaning it up if it is 5.0 or 5.8 but the engine number on the front confirms it for me. I guess I will press on with the teardown in the morning and go from there. I am sure I will be visiting this site soon to bother you with more questions but I really do appreciate your time. Thank you.
