Starter hook up question

So I have an 89 camaro, originally had a 305 TBI and I have now swapped to a modified l98 setup. I wired up the starter and I was wondering which wires go to the LARGE post and which ones go to the SMALL post. I think there is a red wire, a purple wire, a black wire and maybe another black wire, I think. Any suggestions would be helpful....

here's my problem, The battery holds a charge while I'm not driving it. But I can;t drive it very far without the voltage meter dropping and the car stalling no mater what speed. Resuting in a dead battery. Alternator is new. Could something be off in the starter wiring?

It is probly the field wire going to the alt. It sends 12v to the alt when the key is on to tell it to charge.

is the field wire the one I bolt on to the back of the alternator? Or is it the wires on top with the connector attached to them?? Should I trace these back to see were they go or what?
