All interior harness the same for any given year?

I have a 91 GTA that is originally an auto but am converting to manual with the rebuild/engine swap. In my 88 there was a connector for the neutral safety switch under the dash. I looked in the the Helms manual I have for a 92 Firebird and it also shows this connector in the wiring section. I took my auto brake pedal out last night along with a few other things and looked for this connector but I couldnt find it. I am wondering if GM used different harnesses for autos and manual cars? My 88 was also originally an auto but had the connector for the manual. Is it possible that it is just tucked up behind the dash somewhere? If so I guess I will have to pull the dash forward a bit so I can get back there a little easier but I figured I would ask before wasting time out there. Thanks

Yes, GM used slightly different harnesses for auto and manual cars. Like on a manual car, you won't see the auto shifter connector. Or on auto cars, you won't see the clutch safety start switch. Or at least not on the newer models (can't vouch for the older ones).

If you need to hook up the clutch safety start switch, you need to run the wires from your center console (the thick ones from the auto shifter connector) to the clutch pedal switch.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I was afraid of that. I didnt want to but like I said on my 88 it had both. I guess I will be pulling the dash out a little to move the wires now. Damn more work on top of everything, lol. I guess I could just jump it and put a momentary switch in there instead

P.S. I love your sig about the duct tape

Hehe, thanks.

As for jumping the wires, you can just connect them at the gear selector connector for now. But make sure you DO depress the clutch (or not be in gear) when you're starting the car.

No need to pull much of the dash to extend the wires from the center console to the clutch pedal. You can easily just pop the shifter plate, run two thick wires from the gear selector connector under the radio, by the steering column, to the switch on the cluth pedal. It shouldn't take more than 15 minutes.

Hope this helps.

On a 91 Camaro I converted to manual the plug was already there. There was a short pigtail hanging near the fuse box. It had two heavy guage wires( I forget the colors) in a pigtail meant for the clutch switch. Factory five speed cars have a short harness that comes from the switch to the pigtail. I didn't touch the harness that coes to the auto shifter. I used a 91 Firebird for a parts car when I did this.

bingo, I will look again based on your info, thank you. I looked everywhere I could see with the lower panels out and the pedals removed. Again your info is what makes me think the connector may be tucked up behind and I just cant see it. I looked for the heavy wires, there should be I think purple and green but may be purple and yellow or green and yellow.

BigBabyLou, Yeah I understand the risks about jumping the wires. When the engine and trans were in the 88 my grandfather had to move the car one time and he forgot about the neutral safetly switch, since older cars he was used to didnt have one, and he couldnt start the car until he remembered it, lol. Anyway I wouldnt want to add more wire to the car. I would pull the existing wire out of the harness, wrap everything back up and then wire in the switch. I am contemplating putting in a momentary switch instead of the ignition switch now if I still cant find the connector. I would rather do it a better way than an easier way, plus it looks more original if I move it. That would also seperate the reverse light wires for me too. I have to wire a switch for the reverse lockout solenoid and back up lights, my cousin had a switch in his 79 camaro for the reverse lights and I loved it.
Thanks for the help

No matter how much I looked and searched for the clutch safety switch on my 91 Z28, I couldn't find one. So I'm not sure now what criteria GM used to determine which car to put the wiring in and which not.

I hope you find your harness!

One of the wires is purple (AFAIR). You will still need to find the short harness to go from the plug to the switch. This is the same short harness on a V6 and V8 cars. I found one for a friend in a sakvage yard in a 92 V6 5 speed car.

I know there are 3 color wires for that circuit, just depends on where in the circuit you are for the colors but I know what you are talking about. My friend says he has a short harness for me so I hope to get it from him

Good luck. I will tell you that in the five years I have owned my car(factory five speed) I have went through 3 clutch switches. I finally got a good one from GM.
